2014 Getty ImagesThe Federal Bureau of Investigation says it is "addressing" allegations of alleged hacking after multiple naked and other racy photos of several female stars, including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, were posted online in what marks one the biggest celebrity privacy breaches in history.
A rep for Apple, which operates the online file storage service iCloud, also said the company is investigating the matter. It is unclear if all of the pictures, which were posted on Sunday, are authentic.
"The FBI is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals and is addressing the matter," the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement to NBC News on Monday.
Online users have speculated that the pics were stolen from people's Internet storage accounts. A rep for Apple said the company was "actively investigating" the violation of several of its iCloud accounts, according to NBC News.
"We take user privacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report," the spokesperson told the outlet.
Lawrence's rep had told E! News on Sunday in response to the leak that the actress did have photos stolen and that authorities had been contacted. A lawyer for Kate Upton, who was also targeted, called the posting of her personal photos an "outrageous violation" of her privacy. Mary Elizabeth Winstead responded on Twitter to the posting of her own personal photos.
No hacking suspects have been identified by authorities. More than a year ago, a man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for hacking celebrity accounts, including Scarlett Johansson's and posting their private pics.
