Obviously, the fashion press has it all wrong. Anna Wintour isn't cold, she just hadn't met the right interviewer to warm up that concrete exterior. That is, until she sat down on the Colbert Report last night.
And what started as one of the odder pairings in prime time (or anywhere) soon became a rambling, wide-ranging conversation that saw the two powerhouses face off on everything from gay marriage to Stephen Colbert's (apparent lack of) fashion sense to what Wintour really thought of The Devil Wears Prada...all ending, as is only fitting, with an agreement to go bobbing for french fries at Long John Silver's.
Really.
"All right, tough guy," Colbert began. "I've got a bone to pick with you."
Apparently, the feeling was mutual.
"Don't you think you could take a few more risks with the way you're dressing," Wintour began, immediately laying into the faux-conservative pundit. "Now that you're endorsing gay marriage, Tad will be a little disappointed in your look."
"Excuse me, madam...I am not endorsing gay marriage, I'm resisting gay marriage," Colbert said, later checking himself when he became immersed in one of Wintour's anecdotes about the importance of fashion.
"Don't suck me into your gay world!" he cried. "Don't do it! Don't make me have feelings for fashion."
Meanwhile, the conversation inevitably made its way to the biggest news of the day, President Barack Obama's public declaration supporting gay marriage.
"I am thrilled," Wintour said. "There were tears in the office of Vogue today in the support of gay marriage. We're thrilled about the president. I think it's a long-overdue endorsement and we're honored that he's come forward finally."
Ostensibly moving on to discuss the Met Costume Gala earlier this week, Wintour began speaking about the designers it honored, among them Miuccia Prada, but was quickly interrupted by Colbert.
"I don't really trust Prada," he said before continuing the inevitable setup. "My understanding is, the devil wears Prada."
"That movie was so last year," Wintour gamely replied. "We've gone way beyond that."
Still, it was clearly no hard feelings as the duo seemed to have formed an unlikely alliance by the end of their segment.
When Colbert asked Wintour if she ever cast fashion aside and would join him by donning "a pair of zebra-striped sweatpants" and bobbing for french fries at Long John Silver's, she had a surprising response.
"Why not? It's a date!" Now that we'd pay good money to see.
